TV power consumption per hour | Plasma, LED, OLED and LCD
13. 3. 2024
What is the power consumption of a TV per hour, per day, per week and per year? How much extra will you pay for electricity, and what is the difference between the individual types of TV? As of March 2024, the average price per 1 kWh is roughly CZK 1.9. After the past few years, this is a substantial reduction in price, which every household and business will appreciate. Customers often tell us how they switch off practically every little light in the house (including the Wi-Fi router) at night, in the hope of saving huge amounts of money each year. Besides the consumption of a TV that is switched on, we will therefore also look at the consumption of TVs in standby mode.

Let's say that an average household watches TV for 2 hours a day. In this model case, you pay the following amounts per day, per week and per year:
LCD

- CZK 0.38 per day (2 hours in operation)
- CZK 2.66 per week (14 hours in operation)
- CZK 135.2 per year (712 hours in operation)
The cost of standby mode is roughly 440 times lower. Keeping it on standby for a year (22 hours a day) costs you roughly CZK 3.4
OLED
An average OLED TV with a screen of around 125 cm (about 50 inches) uses roughly 0.08 kWh per hour.
- CZK 0.3 per day (2 hours in operation)

- CZK 81.12 per year (712 hours in operation)
The cost of standby mode is roughly 132 times lower. Keeping it on standby for a year (22 hours a day) costs you roughly CZK 9.4
Plasma
An average plasma TV with a screen of around 125 cm (about 50 inches) uses roughly 0.2 kWh per hour.
- CZK 0.76 per day (2 hours in operation)
- CZK 5.32 per week (14 hours in operation)
- CZK 270.4 per year (712 hours in operation)
The cost of standby mode is roughly 448 times lower. Keeping it on standby for a year (22 hours a day) costs you roughly CZK 6.6
(*The power consumption of a plasma TV fluctuates dramatically during viewing, depending on the picture)
So it's easy to see here that unplugging your beloved gadgets at night saves you almost nothing from your electricity bill. If you were to convert that time into your hourly rate, you would actually be losing money, because unplugging the TV costs you money. On top of that, you would be causing it more wear and tear. So we recommend leaving it plugged in all the time.
