What exactly is a smart home?
20. 5. 2020
Smart homes have long since stopped being a feature of overseas sci-fi films and are slowly finding their place here in the Czech Republic too. How ready are local electronics retailers, operators and users for the smart home?
TIP: Are you protecting your computer? Prevention is priceless.
What is a smart home?
Very simply put, an automated home = a smart home. A smart home consists of devices that can be controlled remotely, either by controllers designed specifically for this purpose or with the help of a smart device or computer. Increasingly, smart homes are connected via a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, but this need not be the rule. Other communication bands are also reserved for smart homes, and some of them, such as Z-Wave or ZigBee, use low frequencies of around 900 MHz. Communication between sensors and detectors does not require large volumes of data. A smart home prefers low energy consumption and reliable penetration of obstacles within the home.
Describing such a home as “smart” is in no way an exaggeration. A smart home is by no means limited to the remote control of individual elements; it also covers their cooperation with each other. A smart thermostat can work with a weather station and the heating, an alarm clock can work with the blinds or the lighting, and the clock itself can work with the TV, the Hi-Fi system and plenty of other equipment.
A smart home may include smart blinds, light bulbs and smart home electronics such as televisions, music players and speakers, but it can also include, for example, thermal sensors able to detect a fridge that has not been properly closed and alert the user to this.
Advantages of a smart home
Comfort and savings: key aspects of a smart home
A smart home gives users the convenience of automated control of lighting, appliances and other devices. At the same time, it enables efficient use of energy and financial savings through the regulation of heating and air conditioning, and by switching off appliances at times when they are not in use or when tariffs are unfavourable.
Security and comfort: protection and ease of living
The advantages of a smart home also include security and comfort. Thanks to integrated security features such as cameras and sensors, it is possible to protect your home from unwanted visitors and adverse weather conditions. This technology also improves the living conditions of people with reduced mobility or impaired perception.
Control and integration: flexibility and connectivity
Flexible control of a smart home allows users simple integration and centralised management of all devices via a remote control or mobile apps. In this way, the connectivity of home technology increases, and users gain broad options for personalising and optimising the environment of their home.
Smart home in the Czech Republic
So far, the options for smart home devices are not as rich in the Czech Republic as, for example, in the USA, but they are expanding more and more every year. In the Czech Republic you can buy smart home products, for example, from the retailer https://www.loxone.com/cscz/produkty/prehled/
You can set up a smart home more or less yourself, but you need the right knowledge and an overview of the offers, because if you end up losing money on it, it stops making sense.
There are also companies that will fully equip your home with a smart home system, precisely according to your needs. The current market offers a range of comprehensive solutions for both “wired” and wireless smart homes, and the offers of the relevant companies also include expert advice, because your dream smart home does not always match your resources or the possibilities of your flat or house.
At present, more and more companies with a specialised or general focus on smart home solutions are operating on the domestic market. Whether you want to include as many areas as possible in your smart home, or just individual elements such as security, heating or lighting, there are several options.
Think ahead
Up-to-dateness and "durability"
Today, when technological development is moving quickly and trends are changing, it is important to remember that everything passes. When setting up a smart home, it is essential to keep in mind the durability and up-to-dateness of the technologies. It is not at all unusual for some components to stop being supported after a few years, or for manufacturers to stop releasing firmware updates.
Modularity and flexibility
Investing in a smart home can be considerable, so it is important to choose a system that allows elements to be added and expanded gradually according to current needs and financial means. Modular systems provide flexibility and minimise the financial burden and the compromises involved in setting up your home.
Overview and prioritisation
When deciding on a smart home, it is crucial to think carefully about which parts of your home you want to include in the system and what your main priorities are. Also consider the different ways of control, and be clear about why you are using a smart home, whether it is for fun, security or efficient home care.
