What is VoIP calling and how to use it
25. 6. 2025
Put simply, VoIP technology makes it possible to make voice calls without needing to own a landline or a mobile phone – all you need is a good-quality internet connection. In addition to a conventional connection, VoIP calls can be made over the mobile data network, Wi-Fi networks and other types of internet connection. Instead of an analogue signal, the voice is therefore transmitted digitally, and the signal is digitised with the help of codecs. VoIP calls can be made not only between two internet connection owners – this technology can also be used to call a landline from a device with internet access, and vice versa. In most cases, VoIP calls are made using IP protocols from the TCP / IP protocol family, and calling requires suitable hardware and software. Besides computers, VoIP calls can also be made, for example, using VoIP phones, which can communicate on the local network via an assigned IP address. Nowadays, though, VoIP calls most often take place on personal computers equipped with the necessary software – in most cases, the software is available completely free of charge for basic purposes. VoIP calls can be made, for example, via Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Google services. Besides computers, this type of software can be used for VoIP calls on mobile phones connected to data networks, ideally third generation.

Choosing the right provider is also one of the key factors for high-quality, trouble-free VoIP calls. There really are a large number of providers on the domestic market, and the quality of the services they offer often varies greatly. If you want to make VoIP calls at a higher level, it is a good idea to consult the chosen provider free of charge about the options for implementing such a VoIP solution, which will fully meet your requirements for quality and price. VoIP calling eliminates a number of costs, such as the fees for maintaining a landline, and calls themselves are cheaper. However, as we mentioned in the introduction to our article, you cannot do without a good-quality, stable internet connection – this can be achieved by choosing the right solution and a well-executed setup of your home network. Call quality over VoIP is very much threatened by fluctuating latency, or even a small amount of packet loss during data transfer.
