How the internet gets to your home
27. 3. 2024
Although it may seem that the internet reaches our homes by magic, in reality it is a complex process involving science and technology. It is not magic that gives you access to your favourite websites, shows and games. In this article we look at the internet's journey to your home and at the role of ÚVT Internet in making this connection possible.
The internet and its importance
The internet is an indispensable part of our lives. We use it to stream videos, communicate on social networks, shop online and also for work. The internet is important not only for individuals but also for businesses, whose operations often depend on a stable internet connection.
The backbone of the internet – a vast data infrastructure
The internet is built on a vast physical infrastructure that enables data to be transmitted around the world. This network is called the internet backbone and consists of optical cables, routers and switches. The backbone connects various locations around the world and makes the global network possible. Backbone networks are operated by large telecommunications companies and internet service providers (ISPs). Another key part of the infrastructure is undersea optical cables, which link the continents and enable global connections. ÚVT Internet also uses this backbone network to provide its customers with internet services.
Internet service providers (ISPs)
An internet provider, such as ÚVT Internet, plays an important role in bridging the gap between the internet backbone and end users. Internet service providers give access to the internet to both household and business customers. They connect to the backbone network via large data centres and distribute the internet signal using various technologies, such as DSL, optical fibre or wireless connection. The signal from the backbone network is routed to local exchanges and central offices. These are outdoor cabinets that act as an intermediary between the ISP and the customer's home or business. At this stage, the signal is ready for the final step of delivery – the so-called "last mile".
The "last mile" refers to the final section of the internet connection between the central exchange and the customer's home. This is often the most demanding part of the journey, because it requires extensive deployment of physical infrastructure. ÚVT Internet offers its customers various last-mile connection options, including fibre internet, which is the most modern technology for providing an internet connection.

Home equipment – routers and modems
To receive the internet signal in the customer's home, a modem or a router is needed. The modem connects to the provider's network and converts the signal into a format that the customer's devices can "understand". The router then distributes the internet connection throughout the household, giving access to the internet from several devices.
The journey of the internet from its origins to your home is a complex process. Thanks to technological progress and infrastructure development, internet connections are reaching more and more areas and offer the option of internet plans with speeds of tens of gigabits per second. Users of ÚVT Internet services can also benefit from this, as ÚVT Internet now offers connections for households with speeds of up to 5,000 Mbps.
