New European Union requirements for the protection of personal data

The European Union adopted the GDPR regulation with the aim of strengthening the protection of the personal data of every citizen. This initiative came into force in 2018 and affected how organisations operate all over the world.

The scope of personal data collection in the digital environment

Systems such as Google and mobile apps collect huge amounts of users' personal data, often without the users being aware of the extent of this collection. From navigation apps to dating apps, the digital world contains many applications that gather sensitive data about individuals.

Principles and rules for the protection of personal data

GDPR sets uniform and strict requirements for the protection of personal data for all EU Member States. This includes requiring an independent ombudsman for organisations with large databases, and the appointment of a DPO, Data Protection Officer, whose task is to monitor and assess compliance with the rules.

The scope of GDPR

The protection of personal data concerns not only companies, but also public authorities, voluntary organisations and other bodies. This scope brings new obligations and compliance costs for various organisations, including schools, sports clubs and municipal offices.

Challenges and the price of privacy in the digital world

Introducing the GDPR rules is a challenge for public administration, service providers and businesses. However, the price of privacy is worth paying, in the form of greater protection of personal data and of individuals' rights.

Conclusion: Moving towards a safer digital future

The implementation of the GDPR regulation in 2018 brought significant changes in the area of personal data protection. This regulation established uniform and strict standards for the collection, storage and processing of personal data, which led to increased protection of individuals' privacy. Although it brought challenges and costs for organisations of all kinds, its benefits are invaluable. GDPR represents a step towards a safer and more trustworthy digital future, in which individuals' right to the protection of their personal data is respected. Maintaining and strengthening these standards is key to preserving trust in the digital environment and building a responsible and transparent society.
